NDR Feature Film About Aeroe & Danish Island Weddings
Back in February, the German TV company NDR, emailed us out of the blue, asking if we would like to take part in a TV special. Yuki politely replied, ‘no thank you’ since our family was in the throes of a medical emergency, which of course affected us all greatly. We needed to huddle, and Yuki and Anna had enough to do with planning the season’s weddings, so this golden opportunity of free advertising for us, as well as the island, was initially turned down.
But luckily Lisa Knittel from NDR was persistent in the nicest possible way, and it seemed that whatever excuse Yuki came up with, Lisa was flexible and reassuring. Although I, Louise, wouldn’t be able to take part, I knew that Yuki was in control, and that’s how “film crew from NDR” got inserted in red on the business calendar.
To be honest, we’ve made a lot of TV appearances over the past 15 years. We’ve been in several German and French programmes, and even taken part in a 3-part Danish series on the primary national channel back in 2015 called “Business På Bryllupsøen” (business on the wedding island). I still quietly cringe every time anyone mentions that they’ve seen it, because so much has changed since then and, well, it’s just not enjoyable seeing oneself on the screen :-)
When the time came for the filming, I spoke to Yuki from the hospital. Our son had just had a major operation the week before filming, so it’s fair to say that there were a lot of emotions within the family, and even in our small island community, who all knew what we were going through. But the crew at NDR were so kind and understanding and fit right into the Aeroe vibe. They followed Yuki, Anna and John (and Mira and Neli) for that whole week, and I do believe that their understanding of what we do and what Ærø is all about shows in the footage.
I’m probably biased but it’s by far the best advertising for Ærø I have ever seen or we have been part of, and I am so proud of the whole team and everyone who took part. I literally had tears in my eyes, watching the love of Aeroe unfold on the screen when it finally aired back in September. And of course we want to share it with you. Enjoy! :-)
All of the photos above were taken by our Neli Garnet as she was capturing our real couple Adelina and Chris’ wedding day, but here are a few additional phone snaps by us while everything was going on:
