Our close-knit team here at Danish Island Weddings are dedicated to ensure that we create a stress-free wedding day for you that is effortlessly rooted in everything local that our charming Danish island has to offer.
On this page we’ll give you an overview of the process involved in planning your wedding with us in Denmark, from documentation to your destination wedding, whether you are bringing guests or eloping.
Step 1: Book your wedding
Contact Us - Tell us a bit about yourselves and what sort of wedding day you have in mind, however big or small. Use our contact form, to make sure we get the information we need from the start to best assist you. We give free advice up front, on what documentation is required to get married in Denmark.
The Booking Form - Fill out and send us the Booking Form we supply, to secure your date and get started! You can always change your mind and add any extras as we go.
Retainer Fee - Once you have paid your deposit, we create your customer file, giving you unlimited personal assistance from start to finish.
Prepare Your Documents - Discuss the application process with us and prepare your documents.
Step 2: Stress-free Wedding Planning
Documents - We ensure that your documentation is in order and optimize the approval process with the Agency of Family Law which can take anywhere from 7 days to a few months, depending on your particular situation.
Securing Your date - The wedding date is secured and confirmed with the local authorities and ceremonial Registrar.
Book Ceremony Location - We will reserve your chosen Ærø wedding venue (If you have chosen an outdoor ceremony location, we will always have a bad-weather indoor back-up plan in place). And because we have exclusive access to the Lighthouse, the Merchants House and our Beach Hut there is no risk of double bookings.
Marriage Application - Within 4 months of your wedding date your wedding application to the Agency of Family Law is submitted by the most experienced team ensuring a stress-free process and approval of your documentation.
Referrals & Recommendations - We have planned weddings and elopements on Ærø island for international couples for more than 16 years and know the island inside out. We can recommend the best places for accommodation and receptions, and offer travel guidance and much more depending on your needs and size of your party. We work closely with the best of the best in wedding photography, bridal hair and make-up, wedding cakes and more.
Style & Design. We will create a visual concept of your wedding day in our signature Danish Island Wedding style based on your personality, taste, favourite colours etc. Using in-season flowers to create stunning bridal bouquets, boutonnieres, flower crowns and floral arrangements, and our vast collection of vintage china, stemware, furniture, fabrics, vases and other vintage decor objects to set the mood.
Vendor Coordination - We make sure every other collaborator involved with your day (registrar, restaurant, hotel, make-up artist, photographer etc.) remain updated on all relevant decisions and changes throughout the planning process.
Step 3: The Day Before
Check In - You must check in at Aeroe registry office with your passports for a quick ID verification the day before your wedding. It takes no more than 5 minutes!
In Person Meeting - We meet with you in person at our Danish Island Weddings office in the Merchants House (Den Gamle Købmandsgaard) in the center of Ærøskøbing to go over any final details so everyone is on the same page and you can get a good night’s sleep knowing that everything is well taken care of and you know exactly what to expect :-)
Flower Harvest - We harvest locally grown organic cutflowers right here on the island the day before your wedding and keep them cool and safe over night so they look their best on your wedding day.
Step 4: On your wedding day
Getting Ready – Our little ‘getting ready room’, at the old Merchants House on Ærøskøbing town square is available for all our brides/couples to use as part of our service.
Preperations & Event Styling - On the morning of your wedding there is so much going on behind the scenes and we are all busy bees, creating floral arrangements, picking up the wedding cake, setting tables, putting champagne on ice, greeting the registrar and so much more. But the whole point is that you won’t have to worry about any of it except showing up and making memories ;-)
Day-of Coordination - We are of course present in person before, during, and after the ceremony, assisting you (and of course any guests) with a calm and thoughtful approach. We have done this for 16 years and are completely at ease in our surroundings and know how to make you feel at home too.
Marriage Certificate You immediately receive your international marriage certificate in 5 languages: Danish, English, German, French and Spanish.
Clearing up - We handle all the clearing up and cleaning after your celebration, so you can enjoy your time on Ærø as newlyweds.
Step 5: You said Yes! :
Apostille and Legalisation - We can arrange for an Apostille from the Danish Foreign Ministry or full legalisation, if needed. Some countries will require full legalisation through the appropriate embassy. If you’re in doubt, just ask and we’ll advise accordingly.
Last but not least: Enjoy your life together!!! :-
